So people have stopped by and the house is messy. What do you do?
Apologize! "I am just so sorry the house is such a mess." This is a great way to imply that messiness in your home is so not typical. In fact, despite your mess, this comment may just have them believe you are really a neat freak.
Take it one step further! Even if you secretly think the house isn't that bad, apologize anyway. This will communicate to your guests that usually the house is spotless.
***Hint: This tip can work for more than a messy house! Apologizing for "dry" meat or "bland" potatoes will make your dinner guests believe you are a passionate gourmet who can't stomach a less-than-stellar meal. Apologizing for looking "scrubby" lets your companions know than you typically look pert and polished. The possibilities are limitless, so let your imagination run with this one!***
I apologize without even thinking! I would add, only acknowledge the mess or potatoes ONCE--otherwise it gets annoying!
ReplyDeleteA good thing to do is follow up the apology with a comment that tells the guest that, whatever the condition of the house, or the dryness of the roast, you are SO GLAD to be able to share in their company!
